| Wetherlam isn't an easy mountain to climb from any angle,
although this route is varying and full of interest. Not
only will you bag the summit of Wetherlam but also the
summits of Lakeland classics Grey Friar and Swirl How.
The route starts at a lofty position on the car park of
the Wrynose Pass which helps slightly by minimalising
the initial ascent. Interests include the aircraft wreckage
near Great Carrs then a detour to Grey Friar will provide
panoramic views westwards. After returning to Swirl How
there is then the navigation of a descent of the rocky
and messy Prison Band ridge that takes you to the final
ascent to Wetherlam itself. The tough descent of Wetherlam
to Greenburn is then justified by the remarkable old Greenburn
Mines and wonderful Greenburn Beck falls. But the final
kilometres of this walk require yet another ascent of
High End to Wet Side Edge before finally returning to
the start point, and this final push can be pretty hard
on already sore feet and tired legs. Tougher than it looks! |
