| Illgill Head is a relatively small mountain at only
609M high that stands proud above England's deepest lake
Wast Water. On the west side of Illgill Head falling into
Wast Waters cold waters are The Screes. They are the most
spectacular scree fall in the country and often gawped
at by admirers from the accessible side of the Wasdale
Valley. The huge rock falls seem impossible to nagotiate
by foot, however it is actually possible to traverse the
entire scree side of the lake by the faint footpath and
some serious nerves. When this traverse is combined with
a climb over Illgill Head it makes for a varying days
walk with views to the huge Central Fells, Wast Water
and the added extra of the thrilling traverse of The Screes. |
