This is a an easy stroll around one of Cheshire's oldest and finest country estates. Now run by the National Trust, Dunham Park is steeped in over three hundred years of fascinating and colourful history. The main building on the estate is an impressive Georgian mansion. The mansion is surrounded by a two hundred and fifty acre deer park of ancient woodlands known to many as the most precious and outstanding in the north west of England, with trees from the middle ages. The park is home to plenty of wildlife including the ancient fallow deer herd, rabbits, foxes, insect and birds. There are many other interesting diversions on the walk like the now fully restored 18th century saw mill, the old gamekeepers slaughter house and the huge and unusual deer barn. This walk starts from the quaint village of Dunham Massey and enters the park by one of its quieter entrances. The walk avoids the bustle of crowds and inflated food and drink prices at the hall itself and instead refreshments are found at the idyllic Swan With Two Nicks country pub just outside the park. The walk is a circular walk but to be honest I would simply use this walk as a guideline and make up your own walk as there is so much to see in this absolute gem of a park which fortunately for me is only a few minutes from my front door.
